Does the proverbial "no struggle, no progress", hold true for you? Any funny anecdotes?
Yes, very tough, being a professional musician was not easy in those days. You really didn't get out of it what you put in - its many many hours spent rehearsing and travelling. Landing into the world of commercial art, at the age of 25, was tough too, I had a lot of catching up to do. I remember doing a TV commercial, later in my career, for an art director I was interviewed by, when I first started. After the TVC was completed, I reminded him of the interview, and with the slowly dawning recognition of who I was, came a huge embarrassed flush in his face. But he was fine...a nice fellow, as it turns out.
